With generations changing, beliefs around astrology are also evolving. Some people(the newer generation) question its role in modern day marriages, while others continue to follow it with strong faith. In India, many families still consider astrology an important part of marriage decisions.
Astrology is often believed to help plan important wedding ceremonies so that the celebrations take place smoothly and mark a positive beginning for the couple’s married life.
Let us see how the role of an astrologer in an Indian wedding is connected to different stages of a couple’s marriage journey and family life.
In many Indian families, the first step after a marriage proposal is to check the compatibility of the couple’s birth charts. This process is commonly known as Kundali Milan.
Kundali matching for marriage is about comparing the birth charts of the bride and groom using their birth (date, time, and place), Nakshatra (birth star), family lineage or Gotra, and the Janma Naam (name related with the birth star). Based on this, the astrologer studies the position of planets and other astrological factors.
One common tradition is 36 guna matching, where different aspects of compatibility between the couple are compared (Nadi, Gana, Yoni, Tara, Vasya etc.). Many families usually look for around 18 points to match before moving ahead with wedding discussions.
Even if the number of Gunas matched is favourable, certain factors in the kundali may receive closer attention before families move ahead with wedding plans.
In the 36-gunas, Nadi carries the highest number(8 points) and it is believed to be connected to aspects such as health and family harmony.
Apart from guna matching, astrologers may also check the horoscope for doshas and explain their possible significance and sometimes suggest rituals or prayers before proceeding with marriage plans.
➔ Manglik Dosha
Related to the placement of Mars in certain houses of the birth chart. Families prefer to understand this condition before confirming the marriage.
➔ Bhakoot Dosha
This is connected to the moon signs of the couple and is sometimes studied to understand compatibility between partners.
➔ Sarpa or Naga Dosha
Sometimes referred to as Naga Dosha. If the bride or groom has naga dosha, astrologers may suggest performing certain rituals or visiting specific temples (Kukke Subramanya Temple) where these prayers are traditionally conducted.
➔ Pitru Dosha
Associated with ancestral influences seen in the horoscope.
Once the horoscopes are matched and families decide to move forward, they begin selecting suitable dates for important wedding ceremonies.
Families often consult an astrologer to choose a suitable time for the ceremony, known as a muhurat. The astrologer looks at the couple’s birth charts along with the Hindu calendar (Panchangam) before suggesting possible dates.
In some families, the engagement ceremony is held before the wedding, so the engagement “muhurat” is fixed first. If engagement is not part of the marriage tradition, families may directly choose the wedding date.
Note: Depending on the region, engagement may also be known as Sagai, Roka, or Nischitartham.
xIn some cases, the bride’s and groom’s families may consult their own astrologers separately. Each astrologer may suggest a few dates, and the families then choose a date that is suitable for both families and also convenient for booking the wedding venue and planning other wedding arrangements.
Along with the wedding date, astrologers also help decide the timing of certain rituals that take place before the marriage, like there are ceremonies where the groom visits the bride’s home a day or two before the marriage date. The timing for these rituals are decided based on the muhurat and family customs.
Weddings in India often include certain prayers before the marriage to seek blessings and begin the ceremonies on a positive note. Depending on the horoscope and family traditions, astrologers may suggest specific rituals or pujas to be performed before the wedding.
In some cases, the astrologer may also be a trained priest (Swamy or Poojari) and perform these rituals themselves. In other cases, a separate priest conducts the ceremony. These rituals are often seen as a way for families to prepare spiritually before the wedding celebrations begin.
Even in love marriages, some families who strongly believe in astrology may hesitate to check the horoscope because they worry that a mismatch could upset the couple. Others may still choose to proceed and consult an astrologer in the usual way.
If the Kundali Milan does not match, the astrologer may suggest performing specific pujas, visiting particular temples, or in some cases adjusting the name of the bride or groom to better align with the horoscope(this happens even for arranged marriages).
Even after this, some couples may still decide to move forward. However, when families place strong importance on astrology, a mismatch may sometimes lead to separation or heartbreak.
Astrology continues to play a role in many Indian weddings, especially for families who value traditional practices. From horoscope matching to deciding marriage “Muhuratm”, astrologers may guide several stages of the process. At the same time, beliefs and practices can vary from one family to another.
For some, astrology is an essential part of planning a marriage, while others may see it as one of many traditions that shape the journey toward a wedding.

In traditional astrology, this situation is called Nadi Dosha. Some families may consult astrologers for further analysis or remedies before deciding how to proceed.
